Book Review: The One and Just Ivan
Before I brainstorm the review on The One and Only Ivan, let me set the record direct. From the school of idea I hail from, in that location are no children'south books. Especially, yous can't bracket them to a sure age group; unless it'southward an alphabet book, elementary math or better withal – book on potty training. So, I would say, at that place are by and large books for children of all ages. You choose your book according to how you assess your age; exist it at eye or as per the paperwork. This book would definitely fit into the category – book for children of all ages.
The book opens with George Eliot 's quote "It is never too tardily to be what you might have been." well, you may already be enlightened that George Eliot was the pen proper noun of Mary Anne Evans, an English Novelist. Every bit per her, she used a male name so that her work is taken seriously, and breaks the stereotype that women'south writing was limited to light-hearted dearest stories. Peradventure, this was the author's attempt to draw a parallel with our protagonist Ivan who is known by many names. Ranging from Freeway Gorilla, The Ape at Exit 8, The One and Only Ivan to Mighty Silverback, people accept given him several names.
"Memories are precious … they help tell us who we are."
Reverse to the ferocious gorilla that's painted on the billboard outside to attract visitors, he's patient and piece of cake-going. Not the stereotypical "King Kong", which the visitors perceive him to exist. Somewhen, yous volition get to know the proper noun given to Ivan by his parents when he was part of the band and the reason backside it. In one instance, he goes on to state that "Humans waste words. They toss them similar banana peels and exit them to rot." How truthful?!
The narrative from Ivan'southward angle is unproblematic yet profound. Dissimilar humans, he doesn't waste words like banana peel. In fact, each chapter with by and large a brief title covers a solar day's account and doesn't go beyond 2 to 3 pages. That said, in that location's more than to each instance than what you read. The observations from a primate's perspective makes the read all the more insightful and thought-provoking. Catherine Applegate knows to paint the reader's imagination with simple words. More then, like deriving kaleidoscopic shades using primary colors.
"Her eyes are similar Stella's, black and long-lashed, abysmal lakes fringed past alpine grass."
"He goes back to work. His mop moves across the empty food court like a giant castor, painting a picture no one will e'er run into."
From start to end, each graphic symbol has a role to play in keeping the footstep of the story going. Stella'due south recollection of her time at the circus and stories of yore go out you speechless. Julia's beloved for painting, which she shares with Ivan makes you optimistic. Business-minded Mack'south shrewdness to run the mall, yet his veiled kindness throws lite on the grey shade of humanity. Crimson's innocence and stubbornness that turns Ivan into a storyteller and Primate Picasso, makes you lot feel hope does non disappoint. Not to forget the stray dog, who ingeniously has made Ivan'south domain every bit his abode (and Ivan's tummy as his bed), adds sensible sense of humour making yous yearn for a all-time friend similar Bob. At present if you still experience that this is a book for children; and so maybe, you should ignore this novel and stay true to the age in the paperwork.
P.S. : Get ahead and catch a re-create of The One and Only Ivan before its motion-picture show arrives to a cinema almost you lot.
